Generalities

The core of macrame is the square knot. The square macrame knot is like the practical square knot (also the reef knot or the hercules knot) except that in macrame it is usually tied over carrier cords.

How to tie the flat knot

setup step setup step:
You will need one cord to either side of your carrier cord(s) (++)
step 1step 1cstep 1bstep 1a step 1:
Tie a simple knot with the left cord over the carriers and the right cord under the carriers (++)
Cross the left cord (LHS) over the carriers (++)
Cross the right cord (RHS) under the carriers (++)
Pull the RHS through the LHS loop (back to front) and tighten (++)
step 2step 2bstep 2a step 2:
Tie a simple knot with the left cord under the carriers and the right cord over the carriers, completing the square (++)
Cross the left cord (LHS) under the carriers (++)
Cross the right cord (RHS) under the LHS and over the carriers (++)
Pull the RHS through the LHS loop (front to back) and tighten.

tighten and adjust, you are finished one flat knot. Repeat for a Portuguese sinnet or solomon bar (++)
