Glossary: Tassel Parts

Hanger
Cord
Suspension Cord
the material from which the tassel hangs.

Everything below the hanger may be considered the body.
Head directly below the hanger is the head.
Mould Western tassels often have wooden parts, usually drilled with a central hole, that are decorated with fibre or painted. Mould pieces are probably part of the head.
Neck
Waist
Asian tassels often have a wrapped section which is considered the neck. The neck may be woven or knotted. Sometimes the join between head and skirt is considered the waist.

Collar In Asian tassels, beneath/inside the neck is often another wrapped section we’ll call the collar.
Ruff some extra decorative piece used to hide joins between parts.

Skirt the fibre or fringe that hangs below the neck/waist.
Bullion a highly coiled loop of fibre, often used as part of the skirt.

The tassel skirt need not be loose fibre. A fun variant can be compose the skirt of cords ending in knots. The basic traditional Korean tassel skirt is built from tiny micro-bullions which leaves a tell-tale loop on the end of the twisted loops.
